Ever wondered about where the real truth lies? Recently two members of a church I served had to appear in court for charges laid against them. One is a very close friend and he has kept me informed about the proceedings regularly. All parties announce that they are telling the truth - so help them God! How is it possible? This is not new to anyone of us reaching our senior years (my friends tell me - I am far too young to really know). There are many people who announce that they have the monoploy on truth. As I work in the church this is often proudly stated as a challenge to me. Because I do not believe like others I must be wrong, I must not understand the truth, or my education has led me away from the real truth.

I recall listening in parliament to President Thabo Mbeki's final reading of the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee and feeling somehow disappointed. I felt that so much truth had been left unheard - as some withheld information and others just continued to live in denial about the past.
And so to my question. How do we arrive at any truth? Is it a cognitive rational process alone? Is it an emotive response? Is it based on experience or education or some other process?
Me thinks it must be a combination of all these but must be open to challenge. As much as I find it difficult to deal with some of the closed minded people I meet so I must be careful that in my (fairly liberal, I like to think) approach I too am not so dogmatic that I am not willing to pursue new discoveries of truth - so help me God!
Above all it is the journey to discover truth that is often more important than the "truth" itself.
May today be an openness to allowing truth to be revealed so that we may be transformed.
